The appearance and history of the Morgan Silver Dollar
The Morgan Silver Dollar prominently features the profile of Lady Liberty on its face while the reverse side shows an eagle with outstretched wings. The coin was designed by George Morgan, who at the time was an Assistant Engraver at the United States Mint.
The profile of Lady Liberty as seen on this version of the coin was inspired by the actual profile of Anne Willis Williams who modeled for Morgan five different times so that he could capture her image. The coin was first minted from 1878-1908 and again for a short amount of time in 1921. The Morgan Silver Dollar was created as an effort to redesign the look and feel of the original silver dollar design.
Why the Morgan Silver Dollar is rare and valuable
The silver content of the coin will impact the value of the coin. Likewise, the current demand and price for silver will also impact the value of the coin. While these coins are not incredibly rare, the Morgan Silver Dollar is roughly 90 percent silver—this gives it a greater value than many other silver dollar versions.
Morgan Silver Dollars that are especially valuable include the following: 1881 CC, 1885 CC, 1889 CC, 1893 CC, 1893 S, 1895 Proof and 1895 S. You can find the mint location just under the wreath on the reverse side of the coin. There are five possibilities for the Morgan Silver Dollars which includes Carson City (CC), Philadelphia (no marking), New Orleans (O), Denver (D) and San Francisco (S).
How to find out how much your coin is worth
You can do quite a lot of research online, but chances are that you will still be unsure of the value of your coin until you have it truly appraised. Each coin is different and appraising the value of a coin on your own, especially if you have no experience doing such, can be a bit difficult. Plus, you always run the risk of being incorrect and potentially being underpaid when it comes to selling the coin.
At Diamond Stamp & Coin, we travel to anywhere in the U.S. to appraise and purchase collector coins. We have many years of experience, and best of all, we are a trustworthy source of coin and collector information, sure to give you the fair price and value of just a single coin or your entire coin collection.
